INDIA’S ENTRY INTO UNSC

India has taken charge as a non-permanent member of United Nations Security Council for a period of two years after a lapse of 19 years. The last time India was in the seat as non-permanent member was in 1982. Along with India the other members who have taken charge as non-permanent members are South Africa, Brazil and Germany. In the race for Permanent membership in UNSC are India, Brazil, South Africa, Germany and Japan. India’s position as non-permanent member in UNSC is going to be watched by big brothers especially America for India’s smooth entry to permanent membership in the coming days.
While India taking charge as non-permanent member, Bosnia-Herzegovina is to hold the mantle of President of UNSC till August as per the rotational system. Bosnia-Herzegovina is to be followed by India, India’s charge as President of UNSC is scheduled to be till the first month of 2012.
India’s performance as a non-permanent member will be watched and as per its performance its race for a permanent seat will be decided in the coming days. Furthermore, what all reforms are to be concentrated upon by the non-permanent members are also going to be watched carefully. The recent directive of India’s Central Bank, Reserve Bank of India’s direction to Indian companies not to make payments to Iran for oil and gas through Asian Clearing Union is a step in the direction of India’s efforts for permanent membership in UNSC. Similarly the performances of the newly elected members are going to be under the scanner in the coming days.
As a prelude to reach the position of the top post as a permanent member the reforms to be brought out are to be deliberated upon and proceeded accordingly is the opinion of India’s permanent envoy Harpreet Singh to UN.
Moreover, among all members the country most seriously affected by terrorism is India and therefore terrorism will be a hot subject to be discussed, debated and ways to root out from the face of earth is certain to be deliberated upon in the coming period.
A conducive atmosphere for the permanent membership of India in UNSC has reached as per the indications. Britain is already a supporter, its Prime Minister David Cameroon had already made it clear, France is all for permanent membership of India in UNSC, its President Nicholas Sarkozy has no objection, only happiness for India’s cause, even USA which was not that in favour of India becoming a permanent member of UNSC, during Barack Obama’s visit to India, he too gave assurance of US’s support, even neighboring country China which was once not that inclined to support India’s lobbying for a permanent seat Chinese Premier Wen Jia Bao during his visit to India last month did make it clear China’s push for permanent membership and judging by these facts this is the most opportune moment for India being blessed with the prestigious position.
True, a permanent seat in UNSC is by all means a happy news. Should it be at the cost of India inviting the ill-will of friendly nations like Iran?
With the expansion of UNSC from P-5 to P-15 certain measures are definitely on the anvil such as dilution of powers.
