In the run up to each general elections the formation of a
third front was common and with elections over the third front melt into thin
air. The case is not different this time also. This time too Left has taken the
initiative to form a Federal front comprising regional parties like AIADMK led
by Jayalalithaa, Biju Janata Dal(BJD) led by Navin Patnaik, Janata Dal (United)
led by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Samajwadi Party of Mulayam Singh and
a number of splinter parties.
The Left Front (LF) thus cobbles together the Federal Front to
take on United Progressive Alliance (UPA) led by Indian National Congress and
National Defence Alliance (NDA) led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the
hustings.
Barring Left Front and one or two regional parties, a big
chunk of regional parties never hesitates to desert the Federal Front after
weighing the pros and cons of joining UPA or NDA leave the Third Front and wait
which way the wind blows and whole-heartedly support the alliance which gets
the chance to form the govt at the Centre. Even while inviting the regional
parties and the splinter ones, the Left Front knows very well that the Federal
Alliance is unlikely to exist after the elections since the regional outfits
and splinter groups have no qualms to desert the alliance. What the Left
expects is nothing but a few seats by befriending the smaller parties which
hold massive clout in the respective States. It is almost certain that what is in
store for us is a hung Parliament and whichever alliance bags majority of seats
is first given the invitation to form the govt after going through their claims
to form a govt by the President.
The fun is that with elections coming closer and closer the
leaders of all parties mainly the Congress or BJP turns more and more
benevolent. Each holds out a package of assistance in case one is elevated to
the corridors of power at the Centre. If and when the govt assumes power, they
selectively forget the promises they held out, to the despair and
disillusionment of the voters. Now that average Indian voter has learnt to take
it in his/her stride the treachery being played upon him/her by the alliance
which is catapulted to the ‘throne’ at Centre.
Barring left parties all other parties do not have any
ideology, in other words their ideology being power, power, power and nothing
else. In the case of the NDA or UPA, whichever gets a chance to rule the nation
they take interest in catering to the service of corporates and multinationals
leaving the common man or the suffering poor at the lower strata of the
society. After the colonial powers which departed the nation, our country has
fallen into the hands of neo-colonialists, thanks to those policy makers who
are at the helm.
Unfortunately the ones who take care to alleviate the
sufferings of the common man as well as the downtrodden often fail to garner a
substantial number of seats at least to arm-twist the ruling elite and force
the latter to implement the welfare measures for the good of the suffering
masses. Otherwise, the picture would have been different. We can see for
ourselves, with the formation of Aam Admi Party govt at Delhi, within a short
span it could implement a number of welfare measures and AAP govt continues to
do a lot more for the good of the common man of Delhi. The emergence of such a
party itself is a good omen and one would wish if that party could have spread
to the rest of India. But with General Elections reaching the threshold, its
capacity to influence the masses across the nation is doubtful. Anyhow, if not
this time it would grow into a colossus in the near future is the only hope
left. It is quite unfortunate that the left parties too aim to wipe out the
tears of the suffering masses are reluctant to join hands with the Aam Admi
Party accusing it of lacking any ideology, which also stands for the welfare of
common man it would be something painful.
