THE SUNDAYS

The city is comparatively
calm on Sundays.
The hustle and bustle
typical of a city
is comparatively low on Sundays.
But it can’t shed
its identity, that too typical of every city.
On working days
like a river flowing
above the danger mark
and flooding surroundings
the city is flooded
with heavy traffic
pedestrians, working men
and women walking down
the footpaths
in the mornings and evenings
the morning and evening walkers moving
briskly down the footpaths
the shops are kept open
with people flooding each shop
the flow of cabbies and autorickshaws
remains restless
but Sundays are different
with the working men
and women enjoying
the day making
merry with each one’s
family members
or  undertaking  pleasure trips
to wherever they prefer
only a few vehicles
moving to and fro
cabbies and autowallahs
choosing to spend
their days with their families
only exceptions being
the morning walkers and evening walkers
barring them the footpaths are virtually free,
yes, after hectic
schedules on other days
the Sundays remain calm
and quiet every week.
The villages can evolve into cities

but the cities can’t ever be villages.
