GUJARAT REVISITED – A STUDY ON HUMAN DEPRAVITY

“He was an ardent lover of animals – devoted to his two pet shepherd dogs - and he detested any animal being exploited for commercial purposes. Eva Braun has described how he once rescued a butterfly from drowning in the Konigsee and would not be satisfied until he had seen it flutter its wings and fly away. Hitler also hated to see anyone ill or in pain and was once beside himself with concern when Eva was suffering from a prolonged bout of toothache.”- (Courtesy- James Bunting in his book ‘Adolf Hitler’)
My friend who is settled in Mumbai with his family in his youthful days was a firebrand revolutionary who dreamt of Spring Thunder always holding extremist ideas close to his bosom. His total dedication to the revolutionary path forced his kith and kin to ‘exile’ him to the cosmopolitan city and one day one fine morning he landed in Mumbai. His elder brother had entrusted the care and protection of my friend to an influential friend who was holding a powerful post in a chemical firm. The gentle man within no time got my friend employed in his own firm. In the initial days the revolutionary sparks in him refused to die down and those sparks made him restless. The very sight of children of poverty fighting for their livelihood down the streets, railway platforms and slums made him seething with anger towards the establishment, but in course of time he had to get on with his ‘impotent rage’.

As the days passed by the embers of revolutionary spirit died down in him even without a whimper. While commuting in the local trains or buses with a kind of detachment he could witness the miseries, accidents, cries in the wilderness, pick-pockets getting lynched, man knifing man in cold-blood he was witness to all. A mute spectator to be precise.

Over the years the youthful revolutionary of yester years - when I first met him, he was lean, lanky, with thick growth of hair and bushy moustache, flowing beard, in casual dress without caring much about the appearance-found himself transformed into bulky, partially bald, clean shaven, sans moustache, dressed like a macho also with an air of dignity with own vehicle driving to and fro in style. In the meantime he got married, fathered two children, bought a costly flat in the western suburb of Mumbai and fully dedicated to work got promoted to the post of production manager of his firm and his god-father who was his mentor leaving to his native state of Kerala to spend his twilight years with his loving and caring family.

At least once in two or three years, either my friend alone or with his family visits his native state to be with his family members, at his village that also for a short span and rush to the city, now his beloved Mumbai.

Transformation - both external and internal in the sense that the firebrand revolutionary of yore, over the years, evolved into a God-fearing matured man with much of his leisure moments devoted to Yoga, meditation, flipping through the pages of epics like Ramayana, Mahabharatha, and Bhagavad Gita, and those ones imparting positive thinking like Robin Sharma’s ‘The monk who sold his Ferrari’, ‘Magic of thinking Big’ by David Schwartz or any work of Stephen Covey and the likes.

Existential agony, identity crisis, tension driven life- all hallmarks of a cosmopolitan life- force a man/woman to turn to spirituality, it is no wonder.

Okay. Some months back on a sudden impulse I rang him up to exchange some pleasantries. Once in a while I ring up my friends to exchange ‘sweet nothings’. Without such things after all, what is life?

He was returning home after fulfilling some official engagements in Surat, Gujarat. After exchanging some sweet nothings, the journalistic curiosity in me prompted to inquire about Modi’s Gujarat. My friend could not find words to shower his appreciation on Modi, for the host of reforms he has brought about in Gujarat ranging from infrastructure developments, massive investment to bring about industrial development inviting corporate honchos like Ratan Tata and Ambanis’, also the multi-nationals, the comparatively peaceful law and order situation he was all praises for, Narendra Modi.

I didn’t want to embarrass my friend grilling him on the 2002 Gujarat pogrom leading to the gruesome massacre of thousands of Muslims, mind-boggling vandalism culminating in the destruction of properties, fake encounter deaths, mass rape of Muslim women and girls- those were the days which witnessed Gujarat in flames.

Though I have some reservations for argument’s sake let me agree that Modi is a good administrator. He is honest and uncorrupt. Whether all the good things he had done and still doing can wipe out the blood stains imprinted on the psyche of a minority community and those who watched Gujarat burning helplessly.

Whenever I notice or think about the face of Narendra Modi, I am always reminded of the protagonists of Shakespearean tragedies. Notwithstanding all the positive qualities, a protagonist of a Shakespearean tragedy reaches his/her tragic end due to a single but a major negative point in his/her character, thus getting all his/her plus points getting overclouded, ultimately leading to his/her doom. Othello, Hamlet, Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra, King Lear, Romeo and Juliet all point towards this tragic fact.

As Jayanthi Natarajan stated (I don’t care which party she belongs to) Modi may come out unscathed from a court of law, but in public perception he is still guilty. Even thousands of Amitabh Bachachans donning the garb of brand ambassador can’t wash away the sins committed in the state in 2002 through his tall talks about the development, progress and rich cultural heritage of Gujarat.
Father of the nation who was born and brought up in Gujarat who preached non-violence and tolerance towards all religions and strove for the unity of all Indians irrespective of caste, creed, religion through out his life must have turned in his grave on the fateful days of post-Godhra incidents in 2002.

Big B and an Issue of Brand Ambassador

A celebrity is not born overnight. It is an evolutionary process. While a few reach that status a bit soon by sheer stroke of luck some will have to wait a fairly long time to evolve into a celebrity. Such is the way of the world.

Aravind Adiga was a non-entity in the literary world, till he won the Booker Prize for his novel ‘White Tiger’. Booker brought him fame and glory and in due course won many accolades.

Arundhati Roy the Booker Prize winner though known across a wide spectrum as a writer, actor and a script writer, ‘The God of Small Things” made her a well-known figure in the literary world. Since then there was no looking back, though she didn’t pen another fiction but plunged into the mainstream as a social activist and writer many of her articles and speeches could set off ripples across the world over and many publishers, all renowned stood in queue to get her sanction to compile her articles and speeches into books, all sold like hot cakes across the world. ‘Algebra of Infinite Justice’, ‘An Ordinary Man’s Guide to Empire’ and ‘The Shape of the Beast’, all still read, discussed and appreciated around the world. Still when her name is mentioned soon comes into mind the face of a Booker Prize Winner.

Kiran Desai, the Booker Prize Winner for her novel ‘Inheritance of Loss’ albeit the beloved daughter of well-known writer Anita Desai whose books came up for consideration of Booker Committee more than once she didn’t have the luck at least for once and Kiran had to run with her manuscript of her novel from pillar to post to get it published but almost all publishers spurned it she didn’t lose heart and was determined to get it published and at last goddess of luck opened her eyes before her.

The rest is history.

Similar are the cases with umpteen writers, regional and international, who had to wage relentless struggles to reach the position they aspired for and those who fell on the way getting depressed are also galore, not because of lack of calibre or potential. Many young men with latent talent and calibre find themselves in the lurch, some gentlemen attributing their failure to their attitude, I mean, not willing to go for any compromises and without the capability to rush ahead in the ever-competitive era of Globalisation with nobody willing to give a push to forge ahead. but some of them came to the fore and hogged the limelight through tireless efforts. Just inquire about their path to glory we can very well learn about the history of their first time ventures like secretly sending their beloved creations with prayers to magazines to get them published and imagine the tears welling in their eyes when they find their ‘creations’ returning to them with rejection slips sometimes even without rejection slips. Writing career should be like a long prayer and one day when one finds his/her prayers answered his/her joy and ecstasy knows no bounds. Since then with the label of a writer he/she walks with his/her head held high, occasionally winning awards and acceptance of awards from well-known figures with photographs published in newspapers and displayed in the visual media. Sense of being an established writer dawns own him/her, gives interviews in style and with pride but from the time this publicity gets to his head he/she treats the upcoming ones with a look of contempt and feels like the fellow getting on his nerves, thus forcing him/her to lose temper. Exceptions of course there are but experiences point towards the overnight celebrities or the gradually evolved ones displaying hubris.

All these ‘about the world of writers and letters’. In comes the tinsel world. Bollywood, Tollywood and the Mollywood.

The shining jewels of ever glittering world of Bollywood or for that matter the Tollywood or Mollywood remain a fascination for many young men and women who nurse dreams of entering that bewitching, fascinating and seductive world, by playing various tunes. Chasing producers, directors, accomplished actors, other friends connected with the profession these dreaming youthful figures ready to fight to the hilt at least to make an appearance if not as a hero or heroine at least as an extra artist. Such is the magnetism of the tinsel world.

We had seen Miss Worlds and Miss Universes of India- in the run up to the announcement of results- answering questions before the grilling jury “if come out successful what would you aspire to become after it?” Within no uncertain terms declaring with ‘confidence’ (My goodness) the enchanting beauties’ intentions to follow the paths of Mother Teresa, the hallowed nun who devoted her entire life to the cause of destitutes or to work for the cause of HIV/AIDS patients thus exhorting the people to shed the social stigma attached to them in the society, for the empowerment of poverty-stricken, mal-nourished women and children in their own country and if god willing around the world.

Upon winning the coveted title keeping no qualms, these enchanting beauties rush to the Bollywood or any wood like that and don glamorous roles. I do not want to name them as they are known to everyone like the lines on his/her inner palms.

Recently I happened to read about a news story about a young boy from Delhi traveling all the way from Delhi and ending up with selling samosas on the streets of Mumbai years back and he later found himself in Bollywood emerging as a shining jewel respected across Mumbai as King Khan to be precise our own Shahrukh Khan ( nowadays I am also thinking seriously about selling samosas through the streets of Mumbai. Luckily I am already a part of Mumbai). And if now he dares to come out into the open the worshipping fans will go to the extend of mobbing him and the security will have to be called to help him come out of the grip of his beloved fans. Idol-worshipping, good or bad I don’t know, even Buddha who was an iconoclast and after his ‘Nirvana’ (demise) turned out to be idol and idols of Buddha abound in Buddhist countries. I singled out Shahrukh Khan, just as an example. Many Bollywood actors, singers, music composers who still hog the limelight must have touching stories to lay bare before us their past lives, their struggles to reach to the top, it is heartening that most of them display no kind of arrogance or excessive pride in these days of glory.

Amitabh Bachan, once known as the angry young man of Indian cinema, if my knowledge is correct must have something to tell us his search for a place under the “tinsel sun”.

Before stepping into the shoes of a Bollywood actor, according to my knowledge he was holding a not so attractive post in a Kolkattan firm. His Bollywood career changed all that and in the glare of flashing cameras he honed his acting talents that won huge applauses from his well-wishers. His imposing personality, his baritone voice and flexible movements, moreover as a singer and TV anchor could attract an army of female worshippers including heroines and in due course he outsmarted the then Super Star of Hindi cinema Rajesh Khanna and donned the prestigious mantle himself. A celebrity known across India and the world over. While feeling proud about a versatile personality at least he ought to bear in mind that all his recent utterances like ‘cheap’, ‘petty’ and ‘rubbish’ to the attitude of a Communist Party leadership for rejecting his willingness to act as the brand ambassador of Kerala were a matter of shame. He should not have used the same ‘yard-stick’ with which he measured the Samajwadi Party’ (SP), a communist party which works under certain ideological constraints and which owes some obligations to its cadres. As to my knowledge for him to lash out vehemently against the Party’s decision it was quite unwarranted and un-called for as the CPI(M) didn’t stoop to such low levels to respond to his allegations. “Damn”, “bloody”, “cheap”, “petty” all such words don’t behove a celebrity.

As he once opined, celebrities are a part of public property and hence bound to bear it and ought to take in their stride. Hope he still recalls it. Sorry sir, I am only a leftist sympathizer and not CPI(M) card holder.

I fear age is slowly catching up with Big B. The angry young man of yester years gradually evolves into an angry old man I feel. Nowadays it seems like he is loosing his cool frequently. He ought to have taken the issue of brand ambassadorship of Kerala with poise and maturity. That kind of approach would have made him more dearer to all.

US HEGEMONY AND DEMOCRACY – A BALANCING ACT

Noam Chomsky, one of the great thinkers of our times is an American citizen. Being a U.S citizen is not in anyway a handicap or obstacle for him to remain a scathing critic of U.S policies, both internal and external, take for instance his bitter attacks against the unwarranted U.S interventionist policies in Vietnam, Iraq, Latin American countries and several other nations, its overt and covert policies of toppling the Governments of certain nations which do not care to toe its line, by extending help to the army juntas and to those who are friendly and willing tools to implement its policies thereby paving the way in widening its support base for its policies of colonization and its imperialist designs still condemned widely across the world. Noam Chomsky takes every opportunity that comes in his way like its piling up of lethal weapons and nuclear warheads, posing a threat to an enemy country which opposes its hawkish policies. A bitter critic of capitalism and free-market policies Chomsky is respected by leftists and peace-loving people across the world.

But he is not deterred by any rulers in the corridors of power in the U.S. He can go on writing freely without fear or favour, he can deliver speeches anywhere in U.S vehemently criticizing the policies of the Government be it a Republican, or Democratic Party Govt, can give interviews to anybody without seeking prior permission from the Govt of the day, can undertake journeys abroad to deliver speeches even if it be against the aggressive hegemony of the Govt of his country without apprehending arrest or imprisonment in a U.S. jail upon his return from abroad.

We have leftist leaders in India, who miss no chance to launch bitter attacks on the policies followed by U.S. Govt remember not any kind of personal attacks, and it is not a secret but a naked truth widely known across the political spectrum, their near and dear ones residing in U.S, some undertaking jobs, some doing business, entrepreneurs, students in renowned universities like Harvard, Yale, Princeton to name a few, skilled and semi-skilled workers. In addition to these facts many Indians hold prestigious powerful positions in various departments. Being a sibling of an Indian Communist, doesn’t pose any threat or handicap in going on with his /her studies or jobs, thereby learning or earning a living in U.S.

Why? I need not answer it as it is popularly known to each and every citizen in India. America is democratic country like our India. While former is well-known as the greatest democracy, the latter the largest democracy in the world. In a democracy, people can move freely, express views without fear even if it be against the policies of the Govt of the day unlike the masses in a totalitarian country or military junta like the one in Myanmar. People always detest authoritarian rule as they feel a kind of suffocation or feel like their hands tied or mouths shut and all the liberation struggles in history were/are the expression of their anger, frustration and love of freedom. We can very well gauge the intensity or severity of the anger, frustration, love of freedom of the people of nation and the a majority of us experienced such bitter feelings during the emergency period albeit for a short span of 19 months.

Why U.S., the world’s greatest democracy and the lone super-power (whether such an entity still exists?) which values freedom and scathing criticism in its stride, nurses feelings of enmity and intolerance towards countries like Iran for going on with its nuclear enrichment programme? Previously it was Iraq which fell victim to its imperialist designs with cooked up allegations of piling up of WMDs. The super power along with its principal ally Britain and other NATO allies bombarded Iraq, massacred millions, destroyed properties and in the end wiped out an entire civilization. Later to its ‘horror’ it found its allegations hollow and baseless and now desperately trying to find an exit route by handing over the reins of power to a “so-called” democratic Government. The painful fact is that neither the then President George Walker Bush nor the then Prime Minister of Britain Tony Blair shows no signs of remorse for their unwarranted, deplorable, abhorrent intervention and killing of millions.

Why, a nation which always swears by and stands for highest democratic values displays an arrogant attitude towards other nations while maintaining a massive nuclear arsenal in its kitty? What logic it has to frighten Iran with “biting sanctions” (Thanks to Hilary) not willing to backtrack from its nuclear enrichment programme. A defiant president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmemadinejad is proceeding along with grit and determination notwithstanding. Gone are the days of a Uni-polarworld. A multi-polar world is fast emerging before our eyes and why can’t U.S. come to terms with changing times?

Equally amazing and embarrassing is the submissive attitude of India, World’s largest democracy towards US bowing to the diktats of U.S., India without any protest or remorse backtracked from its commitment to Iran for installing a gas-pipeline which if implemented would have helped India meet its mounting energy crisis. It is a matter of distress to the citizens of both India and Iran that to placate a fuming U.S. we were infact ditching a traditional friend. Prior to adopting this disgusting and deplorable decision, India, along with US and a few nuclear powers, India voted for sanctions against Iran for its nuclear enrichment programme in the IAEA meeting held in 27 Nov 2009..

And now, to meet the pressing need of passing that civil nuclear damage liability bill in order to operationalize the Civil-Nuclear deal our Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh and his henchmen are busy trying to cobble up a majority in Parliament which if materialized would certainly invite unforeseen disastrous consequences, to the Indians, in the long run. And the U.S. nuclear firms who put up nuclear reactors in India in case of such an eventuality can escape with a pittance of U.S $ 500 M as compensation. Their responsibility ends there. Worthwhile here to remember that other nuclear nations, like Russia and France do not insist any obligation from India to enact a bill limiting the compensation up to US $ 500M. There was a report to that effect by Hindu’s Russian correspondent Vladimir Radyuhin on the occasion of Vladimir Putin’s recent one day visit to India and inking of strategic and defence ties. Then why oblige the U.S simply to satisfy its unjust demands?

Strange are the ways, of two prominent democracies… One for one-up-manship and the other always obliging even willing to crawl before it.
India proposes, US disposes.
US proposes, India obliges.

Kodungalloor Meena-Bharani observed

The annual “Kavutheendal” ceremony was observed at Sri Kurumbakavu Bhagavathi temple, Kodungalloor with religious fervour and devotion by devotees this year also. The oracles (Velichapads) shaking the swords violently and menacingly performed the sacred ceremony before the presiding deity. Inebriated with Bhakthi, the devotees dressed in red-robes invoking the name of Devi reaching upto a crescendo, even go to the extent of bruising themselves with the swords in their hands to satisfy the all-powerful Goddess. A customary ritual mostly by the Dalits to celebrate the important day when the Dalits of yore got permission to enter the temple premises for the first time to perform their religious rites before the deity.

NATIONAL

BJP national leadership under the new President Nitin Gadkari is a new ‘avatar’ (incarnation) with prominence given to glamorous figures like Hema Malini, Smriti Irani, Kiran Kher, Vijay Raj Scindia, Varun Gandhi - almost 33 percent posts allotted to women- setting an example to other parties which also preach prominence be given to the opposite gender in all walks of life obviously to ‘empower’ them. Whether the new look Gadkari has given to his Party would result in change of heart among the masses remains to be seen. However the new team could create ripples across a small section of gentlemen in the Party for not giving positions of importance with the indomitable erstwhile Bollywood product Shatrugnan Sinha giving vent to his anger inviting Gadkari’s wrath who stands firm in his decision. The young President took the opportunity on learning about the outbursts of Mr.Sinha reminded the unhappy ones not to go to the media but to lodge their complaints to the top leadership ie; Mr.Gadkari himself.

Narendra Modi defies SIT summons

The SC (Supreme Court) appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) summons to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to appear before it on 21st March 2010 has met with no response from Mr.Modi. It is reported that Mr. Modi has not cared to appear before the team headed by R.K.Raghavan. It seems he is busy holding consultations with legal experts to move against the summons issued by the Investigation Team. Supreme Court constituted the team in response to an appeal filed by Zakia Jaffree, the widow of former MP Ehsan Jaffree in the Baroda Housing Colony massacre leading to the gruesome deaths of 59 inhabitants including Mr. Ehsan Jaffree in February 26, 2008.

No wheat export this year

Food and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar declared last week the Government has decided not to export wheat this year. The rise in prices of essential commodities and food items must have prompted his Ministry not to go for the wheat export.

In the meanwhile I happened to watch a shocking and painful news item in an English TV News Channel wheat getting rot weighing upto tens of thousands of tons while about half the population of India is within the grip of famine and death due to food scarcity. Imagine the plight of those teeming millions suffering from hunger, malnutrition and extreme poverty, at one end of the country the invaluable food items are going rot due to the criminal negligence of those in the halls of power. Our food Minister was seen lamenting before the media his ignorance of such pathetic state of affairs ie; that tons of wheat going rot in the go-downs.

Road Safety bill

At a time India is among the list of 10 nations on the matter of road accident deaths according to Global status report on Road Safety released by United Nations with the intention of bringing the casualty figures to the minimum, ‘Road Safety Bill 2010’ is set to be introduced in the current session of Parliament. A number of welcome suggestions have been included in the bill and in the course of discussions let us hope for more innovative suggestions by the MPs. According to World Health Organisation (WHO) report - out of the 1.3 million casualties from road accidents reported from across the world 60 percent of the casualties occur in India. Imagine the alarming plight of the lack of infrastructure facilities on the one side and steep rise in the number of new vehicles entering the dilapidated roads on the other side.

Nirupama Subramaniam’s successful completion of assignment in Pak

Nirupama Subramaniam after successful completion of her 4 year assignment as Correspondent of National daily ‘The Hindu’ has returned to India with mixed feelings. Braving all dangers and obstacles in the course of her assignment like assassinations, (she was very much present at a few feet away from the venue Former PM Benazir Bhutto was gunned down by terrorists in the run-up to the previous elections) constant verbal altercations among the various political parties, protest demonstrations, frequent bomb blasts leading to deaths of innocents and damage of property, various power centres, terror outfits, a nation called the world over as the epicenter of terrorism, she was sad to leave her friends who were sincere, loving and helpful in her performance of her professional obligations. She even recalls the touching words of Pak President Asif Ali Zardari: “There is an Indian in every Pakistani and there is a Pakistani in every Indian” and to her delight and excitement she could very well fathom the depths of those words while interacting with the fellow Pakistanis. To her sorrow and grief she came to a touching conclusion that the enmity prevails between the political leaders of the respective nations and that the citizens of both nations always hope for friendly relations, constant contacts and reunion. To fulfill this long-cherished dream the common citizens will have to come to the fore thereby heralding a happy dawn. It is worthwhile to mention here that she was awarded several times for the best correspondent for in-depth reporting from across the border.

Sustainable Ecological resolutions

While inaugurating the first Lawrence Picking Memorial at Chennai, Robert Jenson, Professor, School of Journalism, Texas dwelt on the need for Sustainable Ecological Resolutions instead of going mad after technology for the range of the moment progress in the development of a country. Such unwarranted obsession with technological development without taking care of sustainable ecology will ultimately lead to disastrous consequences.

Lawrence Picking who was a Faculty at the Asian College of Journalism for a short span passed away recently and the occasion was exclusively devoted to commemorate him thus offering homage to a distinguished Journalist and Teacher who imparted innovative ideas among the ACJ students. N.Ram, Editor-in-Chief- ‘The Hindu’-, Sasi Kumar, Media Foundation Chairman and other distinguished persons took part in the memorial inauguration.

In the course of his speech Robert Jenson took umbrage at “Paid News Syndrome” and stressed in no uncertain terms that it was not in anyway connected with Professional Journalism. He exhorted the audience who listened to him in rapt attention the importance of upholding values and ethics in Professional Journalism.

N.Ram, Editor-in-Chief, The Hindu, was also present on the occasion. Anna’s contribution to Dravidian movement in Tamil Nadu and his relentless fight for the Dravidian movement could put an end to decades of Congress rule even outshining the former congress icon K.Kamaraj.

INTERNATIONAL

In a few weeks from now, Britain will go to polls. For Gordon Brown, Prime Minister and leader of Labour Party it will surely be an uphill task in the face of increasing discontent among the electorate to reach 10 Downing Street this time. The Iraq blunder unnecessarily committed by his predecessor Tony Blair and Mr.Brown’s collusion with the Blair decision, pushed both of them into a tight corner. Blair facing the ire of his New Labour Party comrades had to bow out, paving the way for his bete noire Gordon Brown, then Chancellor of Exchequer also is not popular with the masses. Blair’s deposition before the Chilcot Inquiry committee displaying no remorse for his decision to fight against Iraq, and the subsequent appearance of Mr.Brown before the committee and his not-so-sincere apology for the lapses have not gone down well with the electorate. The Conservative Party under David Cameroon is nursing hopes of a come-back this time around after long period in hibernation the confidence with which he moved on earlier is not in sight now. A hung Parliament might be a possibility this time.

Turmoil in Thailand

Thailand is still simmering. Abhisit Vejjaviva the incumbent Prime Minister despite massive protests unleashed by the supporters of the deposed Prime Minister who was shown the door by the Monarch years back is adamant. Thakshin Shinawatra alleged to have been a corrupt head of State however enjoys massive support in Thailand. The man with a remote in hand seems like controlling the destiny of a country.

A good friend of India throughout his life, his death is a great loss to India.

Girija Prasad Koirala no more

Girija Prasad Koirala, the four time Prime Minister of Nepal is dead at the age of 85. He was suffering from respiratory troubles and was under treatment for the last few years. He fought against autocracy, weathered challenges, feuding political parties, which ultimately led the formation of Nepali Communisty Party (Maoist) causing anarchy for decades and tirelessly tried to bring them into the mainstream. A good friend of India throughout his life, his death is a great loss to India.

ABOUT WILY POLITICIANS AND GULLIBLE PUBLIC

Certain things in life, good or bad, right or wrong ought to be done in private. Sex is great, we do agree, but when the act is enacted publicly it becomes abhorrent and against morality which we are ‘bound’ to uphold in life. This consciousness separates or distinguishes human beings from the animal world. This lack of consciousness enables the animal kingdom to enact the great act in public, it becomes great and indispensable because it is devised by Nature or God (or call it by any other name you deem fit), for the perpetuation of their respective races. The creation of the male and female be it among the human beings, animal world, insects, plants or flowers, is for this specific purpose-to perpetuate the existence of their respective races.

Even ‘God men’ as well as ‘God women’ – here read fake – engage in this activity stealthily sometimes caught. (by the doubting Thomases) with their ‘pants down’ as they are supposed to follow the path of celibacy or practice celibacy. With investigative journalism on the rise, hidden cameras pose extreme nuisances or nightmares for these ‘fake sacred beings’ and certain political leaders who preach morality to the top of their voices to the vulnerable, gullible public. The fake Swamis and the politicians need to take care otherwise get caught in the act forcing them flee to unknown destinations, even take refuge at Haridwar, Badrinath or even the Himalayas thus ‘defiling’ those sacred pilgrim centres.

Now come to the heart of the matter. Last week was UP Chief Minister Miss (Kumari) Mayawati’s. She grabbed the national attention relegating all other issues of concern into the background. On March 15 during the Silver Jubilee celebrations of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) the BSP Supremo was garlanded with 1000 rupee notes worth about Rs.21 lakh and according to some the amount is estimated to be 15 crore. A volcanic eruption of sorts followed among her political detractors and their ‘moral indignation’ knew no bounds. They took umbrage at the wanton display of wealth that too before the whole world including the media world which covered the scene indignantly perhaps amusingly. An arrogant megalomaniac Mayawati- how dare she a political leader that too claiming to be a Dalit and a champion of Dalits?

Kumari Mayawati was not to be cowed down by such ‘righteous indignation’ uproar or hullabaloo. She knows her worth.

The next week on March 21 at another function of BSP, her loyal followers arranged a garland of Rs.15 lakh (the exact amount not known for sure) and the leader was honored before the whole world that also covered by the vigilant media. She took the opportunity to declare her intention of accepting Rupee garlands at similar functions to be followed shortly and made it clear to her detractors or all concerned the venue would be announced later.

All parties, the national as well as the regional ones are naturally appalled at the wanton display of wealth by a party and its Supremo at a time when the State is reeling under drought, poverty, crimes and all such mind boggling occurrences. And, adding salt to the festering wounds imposing statues of Her Majesty, her Mentor Kanshi Ram, her ‘role-model’, Bhimrao Ambedkar got installed across UP and to keep those statues from getting vandalized are provided with round-the-clock security cover.

On watching these funny things gone are the days anger and umbrage as such things have become a daily phenomenon or order of the day across our country. In UP such things happened before the watchful eyes of public and vigilant media.

May I ask you one question? Whether the acts enacted in UP in broad daylight, is a horrible crime if such acts are enacted stealthily or covertly will it lessen the magnitude of the crime done in broad daylight?

The other day renowned and revered social activist Anna Hazarika went on a fast protesting against the pompous life style of the Maharashtra Ministers. He accused them of spending huge amounts for sprucing up their cabins while the State is under the grip of extreme poverty.

We are all aware of the ‘paid news’ syndrome, that gripped the whole nation during the recent elections. The mighty and wealthy politicians of our country during the campaign for the 15th general elections last year were competing with each other by bribing both the print and visual media- it is alleged that millions of rupees were pumped into the hands of certain media houses to get the hollow achievements and contribution of the aspiring millionaire candidates to their respective constituencies for grabbing seats in the Parliament or Assemblies, thus reaching up the corridors of power and in the process enabling them amass millions or billions several times the spent amount. A lucrative profession requiring no capital. The dirty game some in the media world played amounted to serious crime as it resulted in tarnishing the revered image of a vast section of honest media resulting in erosion of media ethics and values.

Our nation has turned out to be a vast quagmire of corruption, not even a single political party is an exception.

What I want to drive home is what Kumari Mayawati does in public other political parties of India do covertly and hence not worth taking them seriously.

Somebody might be inclined to ask whether the love-making in public a less serious crime? Don’t force me to burst out laughing. It has already gone public. After all sex is not a sin. It is great provided it is consensual.

RELATIONS MATTER WITH EACH NATION

Recently I happened to come across a short news report regarding the invitation extended to media watching public to take part in a competition titled “Indo-US relations- It matters” by none other than U.S. Consulate, Chennai. The very title seemed to me a bit amusing as it was fraught with some ulterior motives – a sort of invitation to encourage the Pro-U.S. Government in India cementing ties with the only Super Power- so they claim - on earth especially in the context of a scheduled visit to USA by Indian Prime Minister ManMohan Singh, beginning April who always keeps a soft corner towards it. Besides camaraderie and Photo Ops with Obama and his cohorts - there are umpteen of them – both nations are certainly (likely is not enough) going to seal ties on various fronts resulting in India losing further self-respect to the Super power. U.S. authorities are cunning and adept in prevailing upon India, on burning issues like further opening up of several fields like corporatisation of agriculture, nuclear energy - here read the raging-controversy going on India Civil-Nuclear liability Bill the presentation of which had to be postponed due to stiff opposition from a section in the Government itself and opposition parties including the leftists. To implement the Civil Nuclear bill in letter and spirit the passage of the Civil – Nuclear liability Bill is an urgent necessity otherwise U.S nuclear firms won’t be willing to install reactors in India. In case of a nuclear disaster on account of the lapse of a U.S. nuclear firm, a nuclear catastrophe resulting in long-term disasters extending up to generations will resulting in loss of lives and destruction of property costing several billion dollars. But they are averse to compensate the victims beyond a certain limit-a pittance to be precise i.e. US $500 mn, beyond which will be a huge sum will have to be borne by Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL). Ponder over the days when Indian Prime Minister caring two hoots for the demands of the opposition not to go in for the Civil-Nuclear Bill with U.S. and the subsequent withdrawal of support of Left Front, he even didn’t have any qualms in roping in certain vested interests and opportunists to get the bill passed in Parliament at any cost. He even had to shed his integrity and principles for enacting the law in Parliament. Now the passage of the Civil-Nuclear damage bill has become a prestige issue for him and hence, the deferred bill, will certainly stage a come back in the law-making body - fruits of a stubborn attitude and its aftermaths which our PM has to pay dearly.
Another area which is likely to come up in the coming visit is the opening up of Multinational retail chains across India affecting the small scale retail markets of India and their eventual closure is a near certainty.

On the defence front an agreement to the effect I think which is already in force resulting in dumping of outdated weapons in India thus enabling the Weapons Industry of America amass massive funds certainly a drain on Indian exchequer.

Ultimately on completion of inking of various agreements, India’s sovereignty about which we take pride often, likely to be mortgaged after all the warm hand shakes, embraces, Photo-Ops, camaraderie and all sort of such nice things will not be surprising.

Recall the days when a large majority might be cherishing fond memories of those bygone days (I was only a student, then flipping through the pages of history) when Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru was at the helm of affairs who was instrumental in taking up the initiative in founding the Non-Aligned Movement) alongside Marshal Tito of the then Yugoslavia and Kemar Abdul Nasser, the then Prime Minister of Egypt the first meeting of which was organized at Bandung, Indonesia in 1961 attended by delegates from 25 countries.

In the place of one Super Power during those days one more Super Power was there - the erstwhile Union of Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR).

Both of them equally powerful and also at loggerheads, with the world then under the looming threat of a Third World war with both of them pulling in opposite directions Nehru, Tito and Nasser troika tried to distance themselves from the two super powers simultaneously maintaining warm friendships with both with the encouragement inspiration and support of a number of peace-keeping nations who also wanted to distance away from the two Super powers laid the foundation of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) all of them tirelessly tried to co-operate with each other in promoting peace around the world and also to prevail upon the then Super powers to be friendly with each other but in the long run their efforts to maintain peace between the both proved futile. The game of one-up man ship led to piling up of nuclear arsenal, an arms race followed and head of state of each super power keeping one finger always on the nuclear button.
A cold-war ensued between the both and this cold war served to a great extent in roping in certain developing nations who uptill then remained firm in NAM camp moving away from NAM entertaining and dreaming about false promises of extending economic support for the uplift of these nations. It was the beginning of the disintegration of a great movement and with the disappearance of Pandit Nehru, Marshal Tito, Kemal Abdul Nasser from the Global scene, the remaining developing countries under the umbrella of NAM according to their conveniences, joined each Super power block.

Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) as a namesake still seems to exist and NAM members’ so they claim even now, while remaining in alliance with powerful countries - remember Soviet Union has also become non-existent - with USA donning the mantle of the sole Super-Power on earth (Albeit tall claims, USA is also facing the fate of erstwhile Soviet Union)

Let’s for arguments’ sake accept “Indo-US relations-It matters”-and as a NAM member, the relations with each and every country matters. Such a mind-set among the nations across the Globe is the pressing need of the changing times and for such a mindset to dawn on each nation we will have to wait.

WEEKLY NEWS ROUNDUP

NATIONAL

A book on Finance Minister “– Pranab – The ALL Seasons Man” edited by Sukhendu Ray was released in Kolkata by West Bengal Governor M.K.Narayanan on Sunday. It is a befitting tribute to a veteran politician who prevailed over the Indian political scene like a colossus. It is quite unfortunate that he couldn’t mantle the topmost post of the Prime Minister of India while many others of less calibre made it to the top.

About Women’s Reservation Bill

After its successful passage in Rajya Sabha amidst uproarious scenes, bringing shame to the whole nation the bill is set to jump another hurdle in the Lok Sabha. With the Yadav troika Mulayam Singh Yadav, Lalu Prasad Yadav and Sharad Yadav – is determined to fight to the hilt to sabotage the passage of the bill with their hench men disregarding the sacred democratic traditions of a Parliamentary democracy.

It is true, the fructification of the passage of the bill and its implementation, the gigantic problems facing the Indian women, is not going to be solved overnight. Anyhow it is gratifying to note here that a small step forward itself would certainly be the harbinger of bright dawn in the life of Indian women. Hope for the best at least.

The festival is being conducted under the auspices of Public Relations Department and South Zone culture centre and National School of Drama. Ela Bhatt’s article on Women’s Plight in India

The noted entrepreneur and renowned Women’s Activist Ela Bhatt, through her article in Hindu dtv March 20, has thrown light on the pathetic conditions of Indian Women even while the nation is basking in the glory of unprecedented economic growth proclaiming itself as an emerging economic power.

Ela Bhatt, one among the Organization – Elders - founded by Nelson Mandela South African freedom fighter and its first president knows fully well the widening gap among men and women of India on the matter equalities of opportunity. White men remain better off than women in every aspect Ela has kindly drawn the urgent attention of those in the corridors of power to attend to the pressing problems affecting India’s poor women.

Irom Sharmilla arrested again

Irom Sharmilla, the great young lady who is on indefinite fast unto death. Since November4,2000 demanding repeal of the AFSPA Act 1958 (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) which empowers the soldiers to suppress any rebellion in the North Eastern state of Manipur leading to the gruesome deaths of innocents is under arrest once again as she is reported to have declined to end her fast till her longstanding demand is met forthwith. Her health has deteriorated, her organ’s are in poor condition according to the doctors attending on her as liquid food is administered through nostrils. Almost a decade has gone, still her relentless fight continues with grit and determination. Gandhi’s faithful disciples who are at the helm are really worth emulating for their “compassion” shown to a young woman. Incredible Men.

Pravin Chandra Gandhi dead.
Pravin Gandhi former chairman of Dena Bank and a leading activist in the Print Media left for his heavenly abode last week. He served as the Chairman of Press Trust of India (PTI) from 1994-1995.

RTI amendments deplored
Certain amendments to the RTI (Right to Information Act) being demanded by some gentlemen have met with stiff opposition by a majority who demand the Act should not be diluted or tampered with. Rumors are afloat in a section of the Media of strong reservations and differences of opinions at the top echelons of power over enacting amendments.

Prof.Larry Pickang passes away

Prof. Lawrence Pickang one of the great media personalities and a great educator who had served for a short span of his career as a faculty at Asian College of Journalism passed away last week. N.Ram, Editor-in-Chief of the National Daily, The Hindu, was once his disciple at Columbia University. Chairman, Media foundation Chennai Sasikumar who kept a warm relationship with him keeps the precious moment’s and fond memories of Larry Pickang while he was serving as Faculty at ACJ. Larry Pickman was instrumental in introducing invaluable innovations and also for imparting media ethics and fresh ideas among the students of ACJ.

Modi summoned

SC constituted Special Investigation Team headed by former CBI Director R.K.Raghavan has summoned Narendra Modi to appear before the SIT for questioning on the death of Congress MP Ehsan Jafree and 58 others in the Baroda Housing Colony Massacre occurred on February 28, 2002. This summons is the aftermath of a suit filed by Zakia Jafree, Mr.Jafree’s widow before the Supreme Court, appealing for bringing the security personnel, bureaucrats and political leaders including Narendra Modi, Gujarat Chief Minister.

Supreme Courts order to deport Pakistan prisoners

Supreme Court has ordered the Government of India to deport 16 Pakistan prisoners who completed their sentence in Indian prisons without delay as it has found no rationale behind keeping them in jails for an indefinite period. The Government’s demand for reciprocation by the Pakistani side to release Indian citizens imprisoned there according to the Supreme Court cannot be justified.

Reinforcing Indo-Pakistan ties
With the USA on one side and China on the other side stealthily trying to isolate India and extend all possible help to Pakistan through funds and weaponry Russian PM Vladimir Putin’s visit to India and sealing of defence and strategic ties besides enforcing ties on the energy, space and cultural fronts is certainly a welcome relief for India. Let good sense prevail over the Indian rulers at least in the future. Just hoping against hope though.

Civil Nuclear Liability Bill
On Monday disregarding stiff opposition from the opposition parties and renowned strategic experts like Brahma Chellany and even some reservations expressed by the Environmental Ministry and Finance Ministry, the Congress party (here read Sardar ManMohan Singh and a few sychophants) who were obsessed with signing a Civil-Nuclear Bill proceeding along ignoring all reservations and opposition presenting Civil Nuclear liability bill which is aimed at helping the US Atomic Reactor firms in the event of a nuclear catastrophe at any of the nuclear plant to be installed in India by capping their liability to only US $500 million. Actually the liability according to strategists would come around US $ 2350 million. The long-term disastrous effects of a nuclear catastrophe is unimaginable and mind-boggling as the harmful effects will lead to a prolonged period, even generations. The Bhopal gas tragedy of 1984 and Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster in Russia are pointers in that direction. Knowing all these, one is at a loss to find out why this government is determined to present the bill in Lok Sabha tomorrow. In the event of a catastrophe installed by a nuclear firm, the ultimate sufferer is the Indian taxpayer who will be forced to bear the expenses leaving the real culprits escaping by doling out a pittance and it is shockingly not legally binding to satisfy the wishes of USA.
As social activist and writer Arundhati Roy had written in one of her articles years ago in the changed global scenario the colonization of a developing country like India has become too easy for a rich nation by keeping a remote in the hands of its ruler at the helm.

No Roll-back of fuel prices- FM
Finance Minister Pranab Kumar Mukherjee has firmly ruled out the roll-back of fuel prices as ‘his financial position is quite weak’.
Anyhow it is gratifying to note that we the common citizens’ (Aam Admi) pockets are stashed with currencies and hence no problem thanks to the welfare measures implemented by a benevolent government. All the best to our beloved FM. We wish as the citizens of India we were able to help him tide over the crisis.

INTERNATIONAL
Against all Proxy wars

Hamid Karzai, Afghan President is an “enlightened man” now. After years of hostility with Pakistan dating back to the rule of Retd.General Pervez Musharaff - both of them were not even on talking terms - Karzai has discovered to his delight and excitement Pakistan and Afghanistan are con-joined twins and India only a good friend. We should be grateful towards this gentleman at least for considering India as his good friend. Add to this Karzai is happy to extend an olive branch to ‘moderate Taliban’ elements obviously with the blessings of USA.

During his recent visit to Pakistan he shook hands with Yusuf Raza Gilani, Prime Minster of Pakistan and exchanged pleasantries with his twin brother.

India Government by providing 4000 Indians- diplomats, labourers and skilled employees like engineers and also by pumping US $1.3 billion to Afghanistan for the war-ravaged country for its reconstruction in the fields infrastructure development in the areas of transport, electricity, building educational institutions and hospitals facing suicide-bomb attacks leading to the deaths of several Indians, labourers, diplomats and skilled men.

The latest two suicide-bomb attacks leading to the carnage of 10 Indians and a few persons of Indian origin sent shockwaves across India and also around the world.

Our National Security Adviser, Shiv Shankar Menon and his team left for Afghanistan soon after the attack and declared India’s firm commitment to proceed with development works there without fear by providing security cover to the Indian citizens there. A friend in need is after all a friend indeed. But Karzai is very much enamoured of his twin brother, once this was a committed enemy to upset the ‘throne’ of other brother Karzai.

India sits flabberghasted with fingers crossed.

REGIONAL

M.A.Baby, Kerala Education Minister is angry over Human Resource Development Minister Kabil Sibal for trying to destabilize the federal structure of the education set-up centralizing the sector by snatching away the powers from the States. He sees it as a part of Kapil Sibal’s neo-liberal agenda by bringing Education sector under Concurrent List. Baby’s views and his reservations are worth pondering over. But he should pause for a second and look back for the unilateral steps, taken on the matter of deciding the syllabus and the controversies erupted later with regard to the afore-mentioned matter. The opposition’s protest and anger over the matter are still etched in the minds of the people of Kerala. Similar was the case during the NDA rule under AB.Vajpayee. Then the HRD Minister Murli Manohar Joshi was busy saffronising the educational sector and then among the political parties which took up cudgels against his reforms, Baby’s Party was very much in the fore-front. No justification this to Kapil Sibal’s agenda as whoever enters the corridors of power tend to implement their respective agendas with respect to education or any other sector for that matter.

Kerala comes again under terror threat

Upon the intelligence report passed on by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) Kerala Government has tightened security cover across Kerala especially Kochi, a strategic centre of Kerala where the Jewdish Synagogue is situated which remains a soft target of the LeT. It is reported that Indian Mujahideen and SIMI are awaiting green signal from Pak-based LeT, a hard-core militant outfit to mount a major onslaught anywhere in Kerala. Security personnel remain vigilant to the threat.

Amitabh Bachan to don the Mantle

In my school day, we students were provided with an instrument consisting of a divider, compass and certain other geometrical instruments. When I happened to know about the welcome extended to Super Star Amitabh Bachan as the Ambassador of God’s Own Country by Kerala Tourism Minister Com. Kodiyeri and the Super Star’s happy acceptance of the new post, I was reminded of the two legs of a divider (Compass?)- it can be arranged in such a way that one of its pointed legs can be fixed at one point and the other at a distant point simultaneously. While the Super Star’s one leg is going to be fixed in Kerala and the other one simultaneously in Modi’s Gujarat, he is set to be the Ambassador of two States at the same time. My imagination goes wild thinking about our Super Star becoming the Ambassador of the whole India. Thanks a lot Big B, we are blessed. Anyhow Kodiyeri is overwhelmed for the Super Star’s kind gesture. A peaceful co-existence of Red & Saffron is by any means a welcome idea.

Anyhow it is gratifying to note that we the common citizens’ (Aam Admi) pockets are stacked with currencies and hence no problem thanks to the welfare measures implemented by a benevolent government. All the best to our beloved FM. We wish as the citizens of India we were able to help him tide over the crisis.

GOD’S OWN COUNTRY ON TRIAL

Kerala is well known across a wide spectrum as ‘God’s own country’. The whole universe is the abode of God then how come Kerala alone the “God’s own country”. We needn’t read too much into this claim. No keralite will be inclined to call his home State ‘Devil’s own country’ and whoever dares to think or despise won’t go unscathed. Each state is unique in its own way. Take for instance Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, the North-Eastern states, Jammu and Kashmir and for that matter any states or Union Territories of our Incredible India. Unity in diversity is the hallmark of this nation with respect to languages, culture, natural beauty, arts and literature- a long list so to speak about. Let it be so.

After all who was the Great Man or was it a combined effort who could coin a catchy term “God’s own country” for the state of Kerala?

Kerala is blessed with a picturesque landscape with its lush greenery, flowing rivers, rivulets, streams, sparkling lakes, verdant hills, vast paddy fields, thick forests, flora and fauna, rich bio-diversity, temples, churches and mosques……

Please note that I wrote in the present tense but actually it was once upon a time.

Whether the gentleman/woman or a combined team of gentlemen/women coined the beautiful catchy term “God’s own country” they must have felt, deep pride on the auspicious occasion of naming ceremony.

And if he or them are still around here or elsewhere, will they feel that much pride as they felt earlier?

Here I am forced to recall my childhood days. I was a lucky child who was born and had spent years up to my teens on the banks of a rivulet in the sylvan surroundings of a village. A sort of nostalgia envelops me.

While sitting alone on the cow dung pasted verandah of my ancient tharavadu (ancestral house) especially in the mornings I could enjoy the rivulet flowing with full force unhindered, both sides of rivulet lined with thick bushes and a vast paddy field adjacent to it, coconut trees leaning to the paddy fields from the other side of the paddy field, a Siva temple nearby, sound of percussion instruments, blowing of conch shell with chanting of bhajans, devotees praying with folded palms and the morning sun slowly rising in the East, gentle sun rays and cool breeze caressing me-all indelibly imprinted in the inner recess of my mind. Lucky to have born there and now I sit here with mixed feelings-both joy and sadness.

Now the tharavadu (ancestral house) got converted into a concrete house, the rivulet dried up, the green plants are not seen anywhere on its both boundaries instead concrete walls have been erected, and the delightful sight’ of a vast green paddy field gone forever, only grass patches and at one corner thick plantains have sprung up.

With the advent of neo-liberal economic reforms and globalization on a massive scale, farming became costly due to sky-high fertilizer prices, lack of irrigation facilities, withdrawal of subsidies, and the dearth of daily-wagers to work in the fields, mounting debts to the financial institutions and money-lenders who charge exorbitant rates of interest resulting in farmers turning away from their traditional profession. Real-Estate boom is rampant across our state and our Incredible nation.
Once Kerala had boasted about the land of 44 rivers, water flowing incessantly to the delight of Keralites as also the tourists from other lands. Now for namesake, rivers are very much there, most of them got dried up with large scale sand mining by greedy mafia and those at the helm of affairs remaining detached as they are busy with pre-occupations which are of much benefit to them. As the ecological plunder still rampant our forests are gradually getting thin and greenery fast disappearing. The sacred river Nila (Bharathapuzha) revered by us which gave birth to a number of cultural icons is in a pathetic state. The river has practically gone ‘barren’ reminding us of a desert seems like somebody holding a mirror to the pity state of affairs prevailing across our once blessed land of Kerala.

With rising concrete bungalows fast spreading across the length and breadth of the state, can we feel proud about and call it progress of a state or a nation? With liquor flowing freely across the land, making the state a heaven of drunkards, with a thriving sex-racket quotation gangs and terror elements on the prowl, religious fanaticism ruling the roost dilapidated roads remaining unattended except when the elections are round the corner and adding fuel to fire the skyrocketing of prices of essential commodities making daily life difficult for a vast majority of population, what logic is there for calling our state “God’s own country” and our nation “Incredible India”? Is it black humor of our times?

SATYAJIT RAY- A PERFECTIONIST TO THE CORE

“If you could only shake Hollywood out of your system and evolve your own style, you would be making great films here”

Guess who gave this advice to whom? No idea? Some of you might have…….

It was a precious advice fondly cherished by the greatest film director of India and after his passing away no film director of India could not reach up to his stature up till now.

In his younger days, Satyajit Ray kept on dreaming about becoming a great film director.

“One day I will become a film director”- Satyajit was quite young that time. His optimism was unlimited. But even his well-wishers could not suppress their laughter. But that didn’t take him aback. He was quite determined. Rest is history.

In his youthful days while fondling the dreams of becoming a film director one day Bollywood was running at its peak. True it still reigns supreme in the Indian film world. He saw umpteen of them all run-of-the-mill ones - love triangle, sex, stunt, violence, cheap comedy and what not. Picturesque locations. Glitterati. Beautifully clad hero running after the sensuous heroine frequently changing clothes like chamelons changing colours, singing, dancing, embracing, getting separated, then re-united, followed by emotional outpourings, the hero thrashing the villain till he bleeds. Villain running for cover, a chasing hero and in the end over coming all the hurdles, both of them live happily thereafter. It was quite natural for a serious young man who always wanted to be a serious film maker who wanted to approach the medium with all dedication, sincerity and commitment, Satyajit Ray soon got fed up with the bollywood money churners, with no substance or message whatsoever.

An optimist to the core he wanted to make a film but to plunge into the venture he had to start from the scratch. With not much funds in hand, without getting disappointed or disillusioned, he slugged it out forming a dedicated team of those who viewed the art of film making with all the seriousness it demanded stood with him through thick and thin.

Even in the face of trials and tribulations never did he go for a compromise in the art of film making.

The whole-hearted support he always got from his loving and caring wife Bijoya was a matter of immense relief to him.

Satyajit’s foreign tours first to London, then to Italy and later to Paris with Bijoya and his watching of innumerable films, meeting with great film personalities of the time and the invaluable lessons he learned from them on the various aspects of film-making served as catalysts in his future ventures.

By the time both of them reached Calcutta Satyajit Ray had completed the script of Pather Panchali which later turned out to be an epoch-making film seen and appreciated world wide.

His dedicated team always standing behind him rock-solid, they were in dire straits those days due to monetary problems - they didn’t back-track in those difficult times and for making of his dream project he had to pawn the gold ornaments of his wife without the knowledge of his mother Suprabha. Being an orthodox and traditional Bengali old woman, Ray knew she wouldn’t allow the pawning of Bijoya’s ornaments particularly at a moment she was expecting a child. Hence one gentle man Anil Chaudhary of his team borrowed some gold ornaments from one of his friend’s better-half and handed it over to Bijoya as a stop-sap arrangement to make Satyajit’s mother unaware of the whole episode. Suprabha was aware of all the goings on but she played ignorance even the pawning of a bracelet worn by Brijoy. All she revealed in the end to the surprise of ‘Ray and his trusted friend.

Pather Panchali created ripples across the film-world and Satyajit Ray remained a household name across Bengal, as also India and film fraternity abroad. The film drew wide applauses; Ray was scripting a new chapter among the Indian film-community. Pather Panchali was screened at various film festivals abroad and won coveted prizes for the best feature film and in India the nation honored Satyajit Ray awarding President’s National Award for his debut film. Wide applauses, appreciations and recognitions came pouring in from across the world.

The film is a realistic and touching portrayal of a Middle class Bengali family centered on a child Apu his sister Durga, father Harihar and mother Sarbojaya. It is a mirror to then stark realities prevailing in Bengal over a bygone period. Along with the profuse appreciations, Pather Panchali faced criticisms in equal measure for displaying the widespread poverty through the film from a cross-section of elite Bengali society who took it as an insult to an “enlightened prosperous” Bengal.

Pather Panchali Aparajito, Apur Sansar (Apu’s world)- Apu trilogy as it is called Devi Abhijan, Kanchenjunga, Alien Tagore’s famous drama ‘Post-Man’, ‘Jal Sagar’ to name a few and a number of documentary films. Ray continues to be a legend of our times and will continue to be so among the future generations.

Sorry I have not yet revealed the identity of the person who had passed on the precious advice to Satyajit Ray. It was none other than Jean Renoir, the world renowned film personality.

WEEKLY NEWS ROUND-UP

NATIONAL

After his successful visit to the oil-rich Gulf nation, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh reached Delhi on an upbeat mood. World’s oil rich country, which is a power player in the Gulf-zone has agreed to ‘bless’ India with doubling the quota of crude oil to meet the increasing needs of our nation.

The decision to enhance strategic and bilateral ties is a welcome step particularly the signing of extradition treaty which would enable both to extradite terrorists at a time this menace is fast spreading leading to nightmares for the rulers and civilians alike around the world. This camaraderie it is hoped across the wide spectrum might lead to lessening the tensions with neighboring nation if not in the immediate future, at least in the distant future.

And on board the aircraft ManMohan Singh speaking to the media personalities was reported to have made it clear to them India’s intention to walk the extra mile to normalize (friendly) relations proceeding along the dialogue path provided a zero tolerance towards the terrorists was taken by the rulers of Pakistan. Unfortunately no signs of an initiative on that score by Pakistan Government is not yet visible.

Man Mohan-Advani spar

In the current parliament session verbal altercations on the issue of Indo-Pak dialogue were witnessed by the nation between Man Mohan Singh and NDA Chairman and BJP leader L.K.Advani. Advani’s charges that back channel talks on Kashmir between India and Pakistan were under pressure from the United States. Though the Prime Minister angrily denied the allegation leveled by Advani, as a regular media watching citizen, I see some substance in his allegation. Prior to the foreign secretary level talks between India and Pakistan, the visits of US Defence Secretary Robert Gates followed by Senate foreign relations committee chairman John Kerry, I think was not courtesy calls or for picnics. ManMohan Singh’s argument that at no time did Obama talk about solving the Kashmir issue and his counter arguments pointing out the frequent meetings between Strobe Talbot, the then Deputy Secretary of State, USA and Jaswant Singh the then External Affairs Minister I refer here the NDA tenure under A.B.Vajpayee does not hold much water. Dragging the past events to the fore and trying to silence the opposition party and vice-versa is the order of the day among political parties and the leaders. It is worthwhile to mention here that as a politician ManMohan Singh has come of age and I wonder how soon the economist has turned out to be a master politician.

LEFT’S IRE against government

Taking up cudgels against the Government on a slew of burning problems facing the country especially the galloping prices of essential commodities, mounting food inflation, steep hike of fuel prices by increasing taxes adding salt to the wounds, the leftists will hold a massive march to Parliament on 12th of this month. The pretest march is long overdue and is warranted. An unexpected victory for the UPA in the 15th General elections and the subsequent taking up of power the ruling alliance turned euphoric and even after widespread discontent and disillusionment across the social spectrum, the Government continues to be arrogant, adamant and complacent. The euphoria has still not subsided albeit failures on various fronts. But a share of the blame must go to the leftist leaders’. In the 15th general elections as the results kept streaming in they were badly mauled in their citadels of West Bengal and Kerala the seat tally went down to 16 from 61. A jumbling of figures.

Taslima’s Article-Sparks of violence

The renowned controversial writer Taslima’s article on the issue of Burkha which was allegedly translated into Kannada (Taslima has vehemently denied the veracity of her article) sparked off violence and arson in the districts of Hassan and Shimoga by Muslim fundamentalists charging that her article was an insult to Islam and was intended to provoke their religious sentiments. Widespread damage, resulted, like burning of vehicles, buildings and other valuable properties forcing the authorities to close down educational institutions and business establishments had to down the shutters. Two newspapers offices ‘Kannada Prabha’ and ‘Jai Kirana’ were vandalized. Religious fanaticism both Hindutva and Islamic or to be precise organized religions of all hues still continue as curse even in the first halt of the 21st century reminding us of the medieval times.

During parole he suffered brain haemorrhage and went into a coma and the doctor’s could not revive his consciousness since then.

Women Empowerment and Women’s Reservation Bill

Today March 8. While writing this piece, women’s reservation’s bill was presented in the Rajya sabha in a charged atmosphere. A pandemonium broke out resulting in a few opposition MPs rushing to the podium and tearing away the copies of the Bill which were on the table of Vice-President Hamid Ansari while a 2/3rd majority of Women MPs belongings to the Congress and its allies, BJP and Leftists shedding their hostilities for a common cause joining hands and a determined SP (Samajwadi Party), RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal), LJP and BSP MP’s constituting a minority firmly opposed to the bill were determined to prevent the passage of the bill. The Yadav-troika stole the show this time also by adopting vandalism and dirty games.

This is the centenary year of Women’s Empowerment. The long cherished dream of women MPs didn’t materialize on the International Women’s day and had it been passed in the Rajya Sabha on the historic day itself it would have been a defining moment, in their life as also in the history of Indian Parliament and State Assemblies. The fight for 33 per cent reservation for women in parliament and legislatures began since 1996 during Dev Gowda’s Premiership.

(Better late than never. As the flash news in the visual media informed the media watchers today evening the happy news of passage of the bill on today the 9th.)

Prime Minister Man Mohan Singh inaugurated a summit on women’s leadership 2010 on inclusive growth and empowerment of women in Rural India on Sunday.

PM didn’t forget to lament over the naked truth that in spite of high economic growth, yes our nation is on a fast growth trajectory, women at bottom line remain a suffering lot as always. Female foeticide, increasing maternal mortality rate, widening gender gap (low sex ratio) and malnutrition, Yes, Prime Minister, the trickle down effect is not up to the mark. Something constructive is the need of the moment for their upliftment.

The Minister of state for child welfare and women empowerment Krishna Tirath also dwelt upon the theme of bridging the gap between the educated well employed women who could break the glass-ceilings and those hapless women who need the helping hand from the rulers like her. Don’t let these slogans continue to be platitudes as is the practice followed since a long time.

Holi celebrated

Holi, festival of colours was celebrated across North India and a few places in South India with much fanfare and pageantry.

As per the custom, it is the victory of good over evil reminding us of the mythological characters-Prahlada, Hiranyakasipu, the demon king - Prahlada’s father and Narasinha the avatar of Maha Vishnu the Supreme Deity of Hindus. Prahlada son of Hiranyakasipu was an ardent devotee of MahaVishnu which was not to the liking of Hiranyakasipu an evil Asura king, who thought of himself as the Most Supreme. Hiranyakasipu ordered Prahlada to stop chanting the name of Vishnu but Prahlada kept on chanting hymns praising the Supreme Deity. ‘Show me your Vishnu’-the Asura king roared in the anger.

"God (Vishnu) is omnipresent and omnipotent"- Prahlada replied non-chalantly. In a fit of rage, the demon king struck a pillar with his sword and from it jumped with fury the frightening incarnation of Vishnu, Narasimha tore Hiranyakasipu to death.

To celebrate this victory of good over evil, holy is celebrated with religious fervor and devotion every year.

Ashram stampede

63 persons, 26 women and 37 children were crushed to death in a stampede occurred at an ashram near Kunda town of Pratapgarh district of UP. The impoverished women and children in the area rushed to the ashram on the annual ‘shraddam day’ of Padmadevi, the wife of 'Godman' Kripalu Maharaj expecting some donations offered by the 'God man' annually to those approaching him with folded palms. The heavy rush to the Ashram resulted in one side of the gate crashing down leading to the tragedy. Picture the image of a cross section of the hapless, poverty-stricken beings of a welfare state running to a 'Godman’s' Ashram for a square meal, a utensil and one laddoo.

BRAI Controversy

The union Government’s decision to introduce a bio-technology regulatory authority of India bill in the current session of Parliament has met with stiff opposition from India’s well known, well-intentioned agricultural scientists as it is certain to destroy India’s rich and fragile bio-diversity - their arguments being the intention of the Government to open up the doors for corporatising agriculture by allowing the multinationals to dump GM seeds in our country. V.S.Vijayan, Kerala Bio-diversity department chairman has vehemently warned against the introduction of BRAI in parliament. Whether the legitimate concerns of the well intentioned agricultural scientists would be of any benefit remain a Million dollar question. Corporatization of Indian Agriculture sector continues to be a fond idea or development mantra of our modern day hi-tech politicians. The poor farmers of India will be the ultimate sufferers if the government decides to proceed with the introduction of this draconian bill.

In the 82 year old history of Oscar this is the first time, a lady director Kathryn Bigilow, ex-wife of renowned director James Cameroon walked away with six Academy awards for best picture, best director, best original screen-play, editing, sound-recording ,sound- mixing, best story for the low-budget film ever in the history of Oscar, the “Hurt Locker”, a heart rending story of Iraqi saga of a bomb disposal squad in the seven year war in Iraq. By becoming the best director for her film, she was wreaking a sweet revenge on her ex-husband James Cameroon whose epic science fiction film Avatar had to satisfy with three awards on technical fronts like visual effects, cinematography and art direction. It was doubly sweet for Kathryn as the awards went to her on the historic international women’s day which incidentally falls on the centenary year of Women’s empowerment.
