*'TABALIST'

Each night brings with
it a chain of nightmares
to her.
Onset of sunsets
gift her irrational
unfounded fears .
Alone, like a hermit
shuts she the door
from behind with the arrival of darkness,
like an uninvited guest each day
and locks it from inside.
Still the sense of safety
a mirage to her
Hands folded across her chest
moves she to and fro
in the milky light
flooding inside,
Fed up, stops midway,
seated on the chair
hands resting on the table,
switches on and off,
on and off, on and off,
the table lamp.
Again fed up,
starts she thumping
the desk
like a Tabalist
thumps his instrument,
in quick succession
his fingers restless
Whenever fear like a demon,
bares its frightening features
approaching her
to gulp her down
her rhythmic finger movements
gain momentum.
River of memories flows down the lane
for a while.
..................When she and her
sweet-heart
seated side by side
during the silent moments
unawares, unawares
her fingers had begun
to play 'Tabla'.
'Dear' he would ask
'you fear something
something I'm sure
tell me'
gloomily, reluctantly,
she would smile,
tired smile.
But on insisted by him
reply she would
'fear of losing you
to somebody'.
She would answer, lips quivering
'Take it from me,
never ever such a thing
would happen believe me'
holding her hand,
close to his heart
he would promise
and his promise stayed forever
she felt him, touched him,
read him, fathomed him
'but it was me, me, me......who,'
clouds of self-contempt covered her eyes, face
profusely flowing tears
wetted her pillows
in thick darkness but
none, even her snoring
new life-partner knowing it
Hatred, mixed with tears
would she watch him
gritting her teeth.
He wanted, always wanted
her body nothing but
her body
not her love, not her soul,
woke up she , slumped into the bed,
eyes close to the pillows
she....

Liu-Xia-Bao, Nobel Winner - Curtain-raiser for freedom in China

"The people's wishes for, and needs for, democracy and freedom are irresistible." - Wen Jiabao, Chinese Premier in an interview to CNN.
With the beginning of 1980, winds of change started blowing across Peoples' Democratic Republic of China. During the tenure of Mao-Tse-Dong, China was behind the Iron curtain and soon after Com. Mao's demise another leader Deng-Xiaoping was waiting in the wings alongwith some other comrades who were dreaming of changing the dismal economic scene of China - the so-called second generation. 1980s witnessed a fuming 'volcano' erupting spewing out the red hot lava and ashes of protests against the suppression of democratic freedoms which ended in a bloody catastrophe. Year 1989, June 4. Venue - Tian-An-Men Square, I shall come to it later.
Peoples' Democratic Republic of China headed by Deng-XiaoPing, the great leader after Mao-Tse-Dong embarked on initiating major economic reforms - the opening up of economy by handing over large-scale economic freedoms to business, trade and industry attracting large-scale investments by various countries providing incentives to multi-national companies thus paving the for China emerging as a nation of enormous potential. His economic reform is widely known as Socialist Market Economy. De-control and decentralisation of the economy replacing the decades old centralised economy helped it evolve into second largest economy of the world replacing Japan which was till recently occupying the second largest position in the world. The phenomenal growth of economy is appreciated and acclaimed the world over and if things are moving along these lines in the not too distant future, there is every possibility of China overtaking USA, world's largest economy .
The defining example of China's high growth trajectory was displayed before the world with the successful illuminating and scintillating way the 29th Olympics was held in Beijing.
All said and done, one question constantly and also persistently nagging me is whether China is a Communist country as they claim to be. If so why curtailment of individual freedom co-exist with market-friendly economic reform simultaneously. Agree, China is keeping up with changing times unlike its young brother North Korea.
But the locus standi of Peoples' Democratic Republic of China comes into question often when we leaf through its history of human rights violations or human rights record. Unfortunately on the matter of individual liberty and huma rights its records are abysmally low.
The demands for more personal liberties and human rights in fact were raised by a section Chinese people especially the educated youth and with the awareness and enlightenment imbibed by the Chinese who went abroad to take up higher studies and upon completion of academic pursuits not denying the truth that some chose to be abroad for the rest of their life, began to demand more and more democratic freedoms. Bread, butter and freedom of expression alone are equally important and hence freedom together with bread and butter are interdependent.
The word freedom can be interpreted and misinterpreted and therefore a dividing line (Lakshman Rekha) should clearly be drawn - how far one could go ahead and upto what extent.
On taking these truths into account it is a foregone conclusion that the Tian-An-Men Square carnage was uncalled and unwarranted for to say the least and it would remain a dark chapter in the history of China. Tanks rolled over students and dissident youths whose sole demand was restoration of democratic rights and they grouped under one banner and in unison asked for it instead what they got in return was death by firing. Tanks rolled over them ruthlessly and those mind-boggling dark moments are indelibly imprinted in the psyche of Chinese people and the spectators the world over. My mind even words goes numb on recalling a youth braving a rolling tank and run over mercilessly. His and his comrades' courage and conviction even in the face of death will not be forgotten by the mankind.
Scores of protestors were detained, jailed, tortured, sent to labour camps, many 'simply disappeared' for good, many executed by the firing squads sort of Talibanization reminding of medieval times before the very eyes of the public.
Among the thousands who launched peaceful, non-violent, struggle was a young man Liu-Xio-Bao, this year's Nobel Prize for Peace winner who is 54 now. He was detained, arrested, put behind bars, sent to labour camp and then freed, after a while undaunted he went on with his mission, arrested again and now that several times arrested and freed - at present he is imprisoned. On winning the prestigious laurel several nations around the world, several human-rights activists around the world have come out in the open demanding his freedom. Moreover they are rejoicing and celebrating his winning the Nobel for peace.
China, notorious for its human-rights record have come down heavily on Norway for awarding a dissident with Nobel Prize for Peace and has termed the honour 'obscene' and 'blashphemy'. It has threatened Norway with the proposed Trade pact arrived at sometime before.
Liu-Xia-Bao is sentenced 11 year imprisonment and his wife Liu-Xi is visibly elated and has reportedly decided to meet her husband in prison to give him a 'big hug'.
Wide chasm of differences over granting democratic freedoms between President Hu-Jintao and Premier Wen-Jia-Bao was reported last week during a party conference. Wen is very much in favour of loosening controls of individual liberty he is still the worshipper of Hu-Yao-Bang who was summarily sacked by the then leadership and was forced to live in political wilderness for his progressive policies on democratic freedom.
China, if not today at least tomorrow will have to make way for democratic freedoms. History bears testimony to it.

COCKTAIL OF EMOTIONS

Memories.
often get mirrored
in the present.
Cocktail of emotions
get reflected in mirrors,
infinite are the reflections.
Remembrances of things past and present,
elephantine photographic
or ephemeral
bring with them
bunch of red roses
all collected and bunched together
presented by her once
true at times they evolve
into cactus plants
with thorns thrust into my skin
forcing me to deflect
attention
deflections but
prove futile
since the excruciating pain
of love still persists

KARNATAKA CONUNDRUM AND ITS 'HAPPY ENDING'

Have you heard about a middle-aged man named H.D.Kumarasamy. If not you should feel ashamed of yourself. He is the former Chief Minister of one of the Southern States of India called Karnataka. Mr.H.D.Kumarasamy is the progeny of a humble farmer from Karnataka - mamed H.D.Devagowda - a bald headed old man in white jubba and dhoti and a white towel hung over his shoulder. The old humble farmer form Karnataka though old is a sturdy chap and being of a rural origin his way of speaking Kannada, his mother tongue, is somwwhat raw. Though he is widely known as humble farmer from Karnataka - he prefers to be known as such, very adept in English also. Incidentally, he once happened to don the mantle of Prime Minister of world's largest democracy albeit for a short period and if not ditched by an 'old man in a hurry' named Sitaram Kesari, he could have served the nation by rescuing it from the morass the country found itself in. Some 'old men in a hurry' are like that unfortunately especially in politics where anything, everything is possible.
H.D.Devagowda, the humble famrer form Karnataka, though blessed with progenies other than H.D.Kumarasamy, his heart goes tender and soft when it comes to his former Chief Minister son. That too is possbile in all walks of life especially politics otherwise see for youself in the neighbouring State of Tamil Nadu. Chief Minister Kalainjar still wants his son Stalin to be his successor. Though Union Minister for Fertillizers and Chemicals, Alagiri is the elder one, Kalainjar's heart goes for Stalin. No wonder then. For certain things in life it is an ardous task to find explanations and interpretation. Even the affairs of the heart here I refer to love it is something subjective. Otherwise ask those who go on experiencing the sweetness of it.
My thoughts go wild sometimes it is like that, sorry, and let me come back to Karnataka, H.D.Kumarasamy and his father, the humble farmer from Karnataka, H.D.Devagowda, the Great.
Today Karnataka is being ruled by a national party called BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) led by one B.S.Yeddyurappa - a God fearing man. Before him it was ruled by a party called Janata Dal (S) under H.D.Kumarasamy with the active participation of Bharatiya Janata Party. Till then Janata Dal (S), read S for Secular, was a sworn enemy of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with communal stigma engraved on it from the very day of its inception. Though the humble farmer took umbrage at the very mention of BJP as he is a proclaimed Secualrist, his son H.D.Kumarasamy without taking it into account joined hands with BJP when the mantle of Chief Minister was held out to him by the so-called communal Party - the BJP. Then everything moved fast and he took oath of office and was swor in as the Chief Minister of Karnataka.
The secular father who was the supremo of Janata Dal (S) and still he naturally 'got angry' and sacked his dearest son and a section of his followers from th party, remember, it is a national party and however the grapewine was it that he was covertly supporting his son to side with BJP, true or false, I don't know the reason being the supremo was toying with the idea of settling scores with the Grand Old Party - Indian National Congress Party - with which Janata Dal (S) was aligned before joining hands with BJP, one thing however became crystal-clear gradually and that was Father and Son came together and the son taken back to the party-fold. Janata Dal (S)'s units in other States stood flabberghasted unable to make out what all was actually happeining. Marriage of convenience - could we say ? otheriwse how come the sworn enemy of BJP one fine morning foun himself in the 'BJP' camp. Or the thickness of blood? Thickness of skin?. My God, I can't find any answer...
BJP - JD(Secular) alliance also didn't last longer that was not bound to last as the Bharatiya Janata Party in fact alligned with JD(S) in Karnataka reluctantly was for gaining and spreading its foot-hold in Karnataka at the expense of Janata Dal (S) and thus establishing itslef in a South Indian State first and gradually conquering the entire South India.
In the ensuing election its tactics reaped dividends. In the 225 member Assmebly it could snatch away 117 seats reducing Congress to 73 seats JD(S) getting relegated to the third position with 28 seats others being independent always ready to be horse-traded as and when required.
Naturally amidst state-wide celebrations BJP with the 'connivance' of a few independants formed a govt led by B.S.Yedyurappa - the first BJP goovt. in Southern India. Governance after all is not at all a smooth affair each political party is very well aware of it and naturally Yeddyurappa had to slug it out several times to cool the rising tempers and stave off threats of resignation giving him sleepless nights. And now he is caught in or got embroiled in such a piquant situation.
18 MLAs among the four are independants quite unexpectedly to the shock of the Chief Minister and to the National leadership have reportedly tendered letters of withdrawal of support to the Governor H.R.Bharadwaj incidentally he was former Congress man and former Union Minister and have fled the city - first to Chennai and when spotted there by the Reddy brothers industrial tycoons and Ministers of Karnataka, evading them flew to Kochi and when media people and irate BJP followers espied on them fled to Mumbai and the journey might end in Goa, even America. (The journey actually ended in Goa as per the latest reports) At whose expense these fellows are shuttling in between various cities, I don't know.
Media reports suggest H.D.Kumarasamy is behind all this drama other reports suggest leaders of Indian National Congress and H.D.Kumarasamy both are behind this 'box-office hit' but nothing anybody knows for certain. One thing is certain, currencies flow profusley and the highest bidder will win the lot in the end. (and the highest bidder reportedly clinched the deal thus giving Yeddyurappa, a new lease of life and as per the formula arrived at all rebel MLAs are promised Ministerial berths).
Yeddyurappa is very well confident that he is ready to prove his majority on the floor of the house on October 11 a day ahead of the ultimatum given by Governor.

DOUBLE-FACES, DOUBLE-STANDARDS

Never does he insist donning khadi
instead prefers jeans
or costly costumes
ties he a Swiss-made Mont Blanc
around his wrist
Neither does he preach
the greatness of Charka, (spinning-wheel)
non-violence, nor civil-disobedience
Eats he meat not behind curtains
not stealthily but in the open.
For that matter
never does he don a
mask any moment.
Acts he in films
given a chance.
'My Life is my message'
'Honesty is the best policy'-
thus spake, thus preached
his Great
grand father, Mahatma.
Lives he by the words
of his great grand father
got?
He is Tushar Gandhi.
Who is the true Gandhian?
The ones who swear by
the Father of Our Nation
and live like hypocrits
or the one who
lives as per his conviction?.
You decide...
No double-faces, no double-standards.
no dichotomy.

MOTHER-EARTH

Like a man caught
in the labyrinth of life
like a butterfly
caught in a spider-web
like an insect
caught by lizard,
like a hen faints
at the very sight of fox
and falls into his mouth
like a fish
caught in the net of a fisherman
like a mouse caught,
trapped in the mouth of a cat
like a girl trapped
in treacherous love,
and gang-raped
and ends in a brothel
for life
like an innocent being
caught, charged in the murder
and sent to the gallows
Mother Earth, day by day
minute by minute, second by second
gets choked and drained-off its values and
essence and being made
uninhabitable....

HEY, DIVINE

Your flowing hairs
flowing thick dark beard
your face a white lotus
your starched, ironed, fresh,
white-kurta and pyjama
ever flashing cheery looks
dazzle the worshippers.
Your rhythmic movements
make they dance to your rhythm
you're Great, divine, ethereal
words stay mute on the lips
of each believer.
Peripatetic you Divine
fly across Europe, America
Switzerland
Ashrams set up, followers mount
But, Hey Divine
why your loving, compassionate
generous heart
reaches not the Sub Saharan Africa
with soothing balm.
Can't you see
emaciated, anaemic, diseased moving skeletons
with fire in ducts
bellies, burning furnaces
food packs in the forms of Gods,
air-lifted
air-dropped
as if from heaven
followed by mad, frenzy
clashes of madness
to snatch them
and the blood being spilt
among the maddened lot?.
Hey Divine
Thee breeze to them
reach them
embrace them
with no stigma attached
do something for them
and wipe out the stains
of sins etched on the walls of your
conscience.
