MIDDLE CLASS REPRESENTATIVE

At the end of each month
papa brings home a packet
with a tired smile which brings
pain to us.
Papa always sports
a pleasant smile, his invited smile
we all know
as there is nothing left
to him to have a hearty
laugh.
He would hand over the
packet to Mamma
who heaves a sigh,
a deep sigh with a pensive
smile at each of us.
Papa slugs it out each
day for the hard-earned
packet to be handed over
to him as remuneration
at the end of the month,
the peanuts left for
him to look after
all domestic
affairs
our studies including
often we overhear him
complaining to Mamma as
days move on with
standard of living flying
up and up the tedious
task of making both ends
meet
and about the mounting
debts.
